How to Master the Art of Joyful Living: 7 Key Steps to Recreating Joyfulness in Your Life

The older we get, the more we seem to step away from living a joyful lifestyle. Working long days, raising families, battling rising living costs, and a chaotic global outlook are all factors causing many of us to lose sight of joy.

Joyfulness in your life is a divine right, and when you realise how much joy has seeped out of your daily existence, you have a choice to change it. It's possible to recreate joy and is essential for mind, body, and spirit well-being.

Henri Nouwen, a renowned spiritual writer, reminds us that “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” Mastering the art of joyful living is something I’ve been experimenting with for the past few years.

What is Joyful Living?

Joyful living is choosing to find the magic, to have awe and wonder for even the smallest moments in your daily life. It’s an intentional act of choosing inner peace and gratitude even in your darkest moments. Joyful living requires you to be optimistic and present, embracing life authentically and with an open heart.

It’s by no means an easy feat, but recreating joyfulness is achievable with solid intentions and a willingness to let go of old stories and identities. My quest to find joy again (after all, my middle name is Joy) has been a rollercoaster ride!

But I’m encouraged by glimmers of joy that push me to pursue this way of living with determination, knowing that it’s vital for my overall well-being.

7 Key Steps to Recreating a Joyful Life

1. Start by Saying YES to Life and Joyful Living

Saying yes to life is essential if you want to create joyfulness. Choosing life means dropping resistance to what is and accepting that the present moment is all you have. When you can move into the NOW and find meaning, you’ll start to feel joy again.

Instead of fighting against life and resisting uncertainty, saying yes and opening your heart allows you to experience the beauty in every moment. Radical acceptance of what is empowers you to move into a space of peace and joy that comes from within.

I’ve always felt hope for life, no matter how difficult it gets. If a day is particularly challenging, I know that tomorrow I get a chance to start over and say yes to life. One of my favourite mantras that I say out loud with heartfelt presence while taking an early morning walk includes, ‘I have a joyful existence.”

2. Cultivate Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation

The more I let go of my old stories and past experiences, the rougher the emotional rollercoaster ride gets! This is normal as I continue to pursue my authenticity, but it’s equally important to manage my emotions to avoid overwhelm. Cultivating self-awareness is key to catching yourself when your mind plays monkey games.

Monitoring your inner world of thoughts and emotions allows you to manage your behaviour and responses to people and situations that trigger you. It empowers you to self-regulate, limiting destructive emotions that could lead to impulsive behaviour such as poor decision-making, emotional outbursts, or negative self-talk.

Self-regulation allows you to:

  • Adapt better to challenging circumstances and take responsible action.

  • Stay calm and focused during difficult situations while making sensible decisions.

  • Respond from an empathetic point of view rather than being reactive in relationships.

  • Stop, pause, reflect, and respond in ways that support your well-being e.g. deep breathing.

Through self-awareness and emotional regulation, I can reduce the intensity of the rollercoaster ride as I move away from my old identity and align with my true self. This allows me to maintain my inner peace, a vital component of joyful living.

3. Build a Mindful Daily Routine That Supports Joyful Living

Choosing joy every day means integrating activities that support this desire. Building a daily routine that incorporates mindful activities ensures you achieve joyfulness throughout the day. My early morning walks in nature are essential for opening my heart and experiencing the joy that comes with every sunrise.

Other mindful activities I include in my early morning routine are meditation, yoga, and a few Tai Chi movements. Feeling my body move and being outdoors surrounded by trees and other plants rejuvenates and feeds my soul with joy.

Making a list of activities that bring you joy is a good way to start creating a daily routine that ensures you meet your quota of joyfulness every day. Simple acts like enjoying a cup of coffee in the garden, listening to your favourite music, or dancing as if no one is watching you are perfect ways of bringing joy into your life daily.

4. Keep a Tidy Home and Work Environment

Regular decluttering of my home and workspace makes me feel joyful! Recycling old paper, bottles, and plastic containers allows energy to flow freely in my home while knowing I’m doing my bit for the planet. Weekly dusting and vacuuming prevent our home from becoming stagnant with stale energy, and this brings me a lot of joy, too.

A peaceful environment lets you relax and feel the joyful moments that naturally flow. Look out for areas that could make you feel rattled and irritated. These could include your:

  • Workspace: Toss out old pens, remove dirty cups, dust your desk regularly, and wipe your computer or laptop to prevent dirt from building up on your keypad and screen.

  • Car: Often, our vehicles become a dumping site! Declutter your car every time you get out after a trip and wash it every weekend to keep it sparkling clean.

  • Garden: Unkempt flower or vegetable beds, uncut lawn, and paths overgrown with weeds create a disorderly environment likely to upset your inner peace and joy. Gardening is a wonderful activity that brings a lot of joy.

  • Children’s play areas: Teaching your children to tidy up after a day of play not only teaches them responsibility, but it cultivates a peaceful environment conducive to inner joy.

  • Mental well-being: Decluttering negative thoughts and beliefs is essential for experiencing joyful living,

Keeping your personal space tidy and clutter-free allows energy to flow while creating a calm environment. While cultivating joyful living shouldn’t rely on external factors, I have found that having a clean home and workspace makes it easier to maintain emotional balance.

5. Forgive and Let Go

Forgiveness frees you from resentment, bitterness, anger, and disappointment. It allows you to foster a positive mindset and to move beyond past experiences that hold you back. Letting go of grievances gives you the freedom to choose a better life full of joy and peace.

Forgiving someone for something they’ve done to you isn’t about condoning their behaviour but rather giving you permission to love yourself and find emotional peace. When you let go of past grievances, you’re detaching the control you felt you had over the circumstances or person that caused your pain in the first place.

Forgiveness is an act of self-love, and without it, you can’t experience true, lasting joy. Through forgiveness and letting go, you restore mental and emotional wellness, releasing old attachments that have been detrimental to your inner peace and quest for a joyful life. Forgiveness and letting go have been two of the most liberating experiences for me.

6. Focus on Your Blessings

Gratitude is the key to focusing on your blessings, and when you do this daily, you’ll start to discover just how much joy you have in your life. Counting my blessings makes me realise the abundance that surrounds me. I have water and electricity, our vegetable garden provides us with nutritious food, my home is full of love, and I’m surrounded 24/7 by nature.

Practicing gratitude opens your heart and allows you to focus on the present moment, which brings with it many small, and sometimes big, beautiful gifts. As I sit at my desk writing this blog, I can hear the birds outside, feel the summer breeze waft in through our front door, and smell the freshly-cut lawn. These things bring me much joy right now.

Joyful living requires staying present and being grateful for what you have in your life right now. Use your senses to explore your immediate environment and list at least 5 things that lift your heart with joy. Counting your blessings throughout the day, at any given moment, reminds you that mastering the art of joyful living is simple when you practice gratitude.

7. Prioritize Self-Care

Putting yourself first isn’t a selfish act! Self-care is an essential practice for mind-body-spirit integration, and when you’re happy, it’s easier to create a joyful lifestyle.

Acts of self-care should include:

  • ME time: Taking time out for yourself, whether it’s going for solo nature walks or having a massage, is important for maintaining your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

  • Journaling: Self-reflection and writing about your thoughts and feelings empower you to cultivate self-awareness and maintain emotional balance.

  • Healthy eating: Choosing nutritious and tasty meals enhances joyfulness, knowing that your mind and body are being nurtured with the right foods.

  • Exercise: Moving your body keeps you fit and strong while giving you energy to live a full and joyful life.

  • Managing stress: Overwhelming your nervous system leads to anxiety, depression, and other physical conditions that make it harder for you to experience joy and inner peace.

The video below talks about how to stay calm when you know you're going to be stressed.

Side note: Stress management is essential for keeping your nervous system in homeostasis. When it’s out of balance, you’re going to feel exhausted, battle with conditions such as heart palpitations, dizziness, panic attacks, brain fog, and more. Regulating your nervous system through mindfulness, breathwork, and downtime allows you to cultivate a joyful lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Life changes all the time, and experiencing joy is easier when there’s stability and calmness. However, if you’re going through a transformational process, you’re likely to have periods of chaos within that challenge you to stay in your lane and manage joyfulness. It’s during these times that you need to work harder in maintaining inner joy.

Overcoming your old self and becoming your authentic being is a noble act of change that needs to be handled with care, respect, and gentleness. Choosing to master joyful living takes patience, resilience, and a willingness to start over every day. On the days when you despair, remind yourself why you started this journey. This will help you to find the motivation to keep going.

Joy is an active choice to live life fully. It’s a daily decision to live in the moment from an open heart. Joyful living is an intentional act that brings me to this quote by Anna Howard Shaw, “I wake up every morning with a great desire to live joyfully.” Choose to delight in the small but magical moments of life rather than endure them. Only then will you find inner and outer joy.
