How Do I Practice Self-Love? 7 Practical Tips to Get You Started

Make practicing self-love a daily ritual. Loving yourself gives you the energy to be fully present in your life and with others without draining yourself. Practicing self-love recharges your batteries daily while nurturing your well-being in a safe, loving way.
But how do you practice self-love? The first step is self-acceptance, which comes from embarking on a self-discovery journey to explore and understand yourself. This means accepting all parts of you – the flaws, past mistakes, and failures without judging yourself.
How Do I Practice Self-Acceptance?
Self-acceptance doesn’t happen overnight, and it requires you to:
Become aware of your inner critic and prevent negative self-talk.
Challenge your conditioning and identify the false stories you carried for many years.
Be kind and gentle with yourself. Show yourself the same compassion you would a friend going through the same challenges.
Feel your emotions and, especially, do not suppress the low-vibration feelings such as sadness or anxiety. Acknowledge them and love them.
Forgive your past mistakes. Bless them, release them with love and gratitude, and choose to see your past experiences as wisdom.
Permit yourself to have a clean slate. Start afresh and take responsibility for your path.
Through self-acceptance, you can love yourself unconditionally. I found the following practices empowering as I started to love myself as part of my self-healing journey.
7 Practical Tips for Practicing Self-Love
The Self-Love Mirror Exercise
This was one of the most challenging exercises I have ever done on my personal growth journey (and many of my clients find it hard too).
Every morning when I wake up and every evening before I go to sleep, I stand in front of my mirror and look straight into my eyes. I say, directly to my eyes, ‘I love you”. Some people prefer to say, “I am enough”.
Either way, this exercise evokes a wide range of feelings. When I first began this exercise, my eyes stared blankly back at me, but as I continued to practice, the sparkle began to return.

Reassuring the Wounded Inner Child
When life feels overwhelming, and your inner critic is having a field day, your wounded inner child is crying out to be noticed.
Place your left hand on your heart and softly say, “I love you. You are safe." This calms the inner child and reaffirms that unconditional love is vital for your well-being.
Setting Healthy Boundaries
A past client told me about the Consensus Circle. Imagine a circle, and you're standing in the centre. Within that circle, you choose who can occupy it. These are the people you trust with all of your heart and who you know have your back.
At the same time, you make sure there is ample space between you and them by expanding your circle to ensure there’s plenty of breathing space.
Just outside the circle are the people you tolerate and invite into your circle on your terms. Far away, in the distance, are those people who have no access to your circle. That’s what setting healthy boundaries looks like. By doing this, you are protecting your space and energy, and your inner peace and truth.
Start Your Day With Clear Intentions
Every morning, I review my core values and goals to remind myself who I am and where I am going. It's veru easy to forget this when you get caught up with every day life! I also set clear intentions for the day: to be kind, compassionate, and patient with myself and anyone I engage with.
I set the intention to be aware of how I think, feel, and act throughout the day and to realign myself if I find myself defaulting to old patterns or habits. We can quickly forget to love ourselves and to protect our inner peace.
Setting clear intentions first thing every day keeps you focused on your authentic path.
Move Your Body
Your body is the temple for your soul, and it needs to be honoured and respected. Moving your body is vital for staying healthy and fit. I love walking in the late afternoon and doing gentle yoga and Tai Chi stretches in the morning before I start work.
Moving your body elevates your mood, reduces stress hormones, and lowers the risk of developing health conditions. You feel energised and connected with your body, which is a vital part of learning to love yourself unconditionally.

Spend Time In Nature
Practicing self-love should include spending time in nature. Through nature, your heart opens. Being surrounded by nature is soul-restoring. Somehow, it becomes easier and safer to feel love, joy, and gratitude again, for yourself and the people around you.
Spending time in nature expands your heart and allows you to feel deeply. Nature is a reflection of how much you can love yourself – she is showing you how much joy, peace, gratitude, and connection exist within you when you witness it in Mother Nature.
Build Healthy Daily Habits
One of the first things I did for myself as I worked towards loving myself unconditionally was building daily habits that supported my well-being. This included an early morning routine to set the tone for the day ahead.
This includes reflecting on my values and goals, setting clear intentions, meditating for 45 minutes, and doing some gentle stretches before starting work at 8 am.
Other healthy daily habits can include:
Keeping a gratitude journal
Embracing mindfulness
Moving your body through exercise
Spending time in nature
Self-reflection and journaling
Reducing digital time
Quality downtime/doing nothing
Eating a healthy diet that supports physical, mental, and emotional well-being
Quality sleep
Self-Love Opens Your Heart
Opening your heart is essential for an authentic life. It’s your Truth. Many of us have closed our hearts because of loss, trauma, broken trust, and hopelessness. Starting over and trusting yourself is key to opening your heart. Practising self-love expands your heart and allows you to embrace life again.
Self-Reflection Questions
Are you willing to commit to self-love, and if so, why do you want to love yourself unconditionally?
Do you love yourself and celebrate when you succeed at something, no matter how small or big the win is? What does it look like if you do, and if not, why not?
"You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection." — Buddha. How do you feel when you read these words of wisdom, and why?
Final Thoughts
I challenge you to commit to loving yourself unconditionally. Using these practical tools and techniques empowers you to practice self-love, open your heart, and embrace your inner self.
