One of our favourite sacred plants for smudging is the California white sage (Salvia apiana). It’s a powerful herb for cleansing and purification rituals, and one that should be used with great respect and humility.
While a native plant to Southern California, Paul has been able to grow California white sage here in South Africa, which has been exciting! This past year, we’ve been harvesting and making our own smudge sticks to use in cleansing and purification ceremonies.
But what are the benefits and uses of this sacred plant? Keep reading as I share more information about this beautiful sage.
California White Sage: Background Information
California white sage is native to the Southern Californian coastal region and is considered one of the most important Salvia species. It’s known for its strong resinous aroma and silvery-grey appearance, while being a popular plant in herbalism.
This sacred sage is a time-honored plant by indigenous cultures in the Southern Californian region, having been used for centuries in spiritual and smudging practices. It’s also respected for its traditional medicinal uses.
California White Sage only grows naturally in the region mentioned above and is currently under threat by over-harvesting, encroaching developments, and climate change. Some nurseries are now growing and stocking it for keen gardeners and spiritual practitioners, establishing it in their gardens.
5 Benefits and Uses of California White Sage
1. White Sage Plays an Important Ecological Role
Salvia apiana is revered for its healing properties, but it also plays an essential role in the environment. The plant has beautiful white flowers, making it an attractive pollinator sage for a variety of creatures. Bumble bees, butterflies, carpenter bees, and hummingbirds are drawn to this plant when it’s flowering.
The sacred sage is a drought-resistant plant. It grows best in full sun and, if regularly pruned, makes a tidy and attractive plant in the garden.

2. Powerful Cleansing and Purification Properties
White sage has been used since ancient times as a powerful cleansing and purification plant. The leaves and sticks are harvested and dried before being used to cleanse and purify spaces, especially those inhabited by the sick. Its strong antiseptic properties are believed to remove unhealthy pathogens in the air.
The plants are often assembled into a bouquet or wand and left to air-dry before being used.
3. Smudging to Release Stuck Energy in the Body
The California white sage is particularly popular for cleansing and releasing stuck energy and emotions. Many spiritual practitioners use the dried plant material, either as a smudge stick or powder, to unblock stagnant energies in an individual’s chakras. This allows the energy to flow freely and helps the individual feel emotionally balanced.
While a spiritual healer or shaman is best equipped to do smudging, individuals can smudge themselves whenever they feel sluggish or emotionally drained. However, it’s important to set the intention for healing and express gratitude for the cleansing.
4. Smudging to Release Negative Energies in Spaces
You can use the California white sage to release negative energies from your home or office space. It can also be used to smudge outdoor spaces. The sacred sage is a wonderful plant for purifying areas that have become dense with stagnant energy.
It’s recommended to use a smudge stick for the ritual and to ensure that the spaces are well ventilated before starting the process. Placing the smoldering smudge stick in a seashell or clay pot prevents ashes from falling onto and damaging carpets and furnishings.

5. Traditional Medicinal Healing Properties
The sacred sage is known for its astringent and antimicrobial properties, making it a popular plant for traditional medicinal purposes. Boiling fresh or dried white sage and inhaling the steam is wonderful for soothing sore throats and sinuses. Native Americans have used it to ease digestive ailments, colds, and flus.
While white sage has many medicinal uses, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before using it. The plant can interact with other medicines and contains thujone, which can lead to serious side effects if consumed or inhaled in high quantities.
Tips for Using California White Sage for Cleansing and Purification Rituals
Honour the Plant: It’s important to acknowledge and honour the cultural significance of white sage and to show respect when using it for rituals.
Set an Intention: Before starting a ritual, set clear intentions such as releasing negative energies, restoring emotional balance, or purifying a space. This ensures you get the best results when smudging.
Use Ethically Sourced White Sage: Discourage poaching and destruction of wild populations by choosing ethically cultivated sage. Alternatively, learn to grow and harvest your own crop.
Prepare the Space: Always ensure that the space is well-ventilated to allow for smoke and negative energies to disperse safely. Be mindful of candles and flames and keep children, pets, and vulnerable people (e.g., pregnant women) away while performing rituals.
Extinguish Smudge Sticks Safely: When you’re done with your ritual, extinguish the smudge stick either by holding it under running water or placing the smoldering end in sand.
Discard the Ashes Properly: Don’t toss the ashes in the trash bin, but instead, dispose of them in the garden as a way of returning the plant to Mother Earth. Always express your gratitude for the cleansing and purification that has taken place.
Final Thoughts
One of the best ways to protect the indigenous white sage population in Southern California is to source ethically and sustainably cultivated Salvia apiana plants. Offering a prayer of gratitude before using the sacred sage is essential, as is understanding the indigenous cultural beliefs of this plant.
California white sage is a sacred plant that should be treated with reverence. It’s a potent and ancient plant that plays a vital role in many traditional cultures that honor the connection between man and the spiritual realm.
Being mindful when using this plant in ceremonies and rituals ensures you honor the deep spiritual significance of this valuable and powerful herb.
