Book Reviews: Choosing Knowledge to Empower Yourself

How often do we read self-help books, hoping, somehow magically, they'll transform our lives? Those motivational quotes that make us nod our heads in agreement, thinking the words will help us to make the positive change we want to make?

We, ourselves, can sprout words of advice to our friends when they're battling with some dilemma. Yet we don't take those very same words of advice for ourselves when we find ourselves in similar situations.

I read something the other day that resonated with me and once again, reinforced a powerful message – “Knowledge is power, but applied knowledge is empowering.” By applying all the knowledge and the wisdom we read and hear about, by actually integrating them into our daily lives, we're then empowering ourselves.

When we've chosen to apply the knowledge that's true to us, we'll realize we can change our self-destructive habits and we can toss out those limiting beliefs that no longer serve us. When we do this do we then begin to transform our lives by embracing and integrating the knowledge that does serve us into our daily lives.

Books to Empower You

“Conversations with God” by Neale Donald Walsch talks about how to make your life “take off” by acknowledging that Life is a process of creation. The three levels of creation – thought, word, and action – is the knowledge you could consider applying to your own life when you choose for your life to “take off”.

By choosing the process of creation, you choose to “think, speak, act as YOU ARE” (Your Truth). Ponder on the following paragraph and then think about how you can use this very powerful knowledge to empower you so that you may transform your own life:

“Go first to your Highest Thought about yourself. Imagine the you that you would be if you lived that thought every day. Imagine what you would think, do and say and how you would respond to what others do and say” - Neale Donald Walsch

Now, apply this knowledge, every single day, into your own life and feel yourself becoming empowered. Watch what happens – be careful though…..your life might just “take off”!!!

I was first introduced to don Miguel Ruiz when I was recovering from a radical hysterectomy. I was feeling a bit down with life and a good friend lent me "The Four Agreements" to read. This Toltec Wisdom Book is powerfully gentle and packed full of simple but empowering wisdom.

It talks about your self-limiting beliefs and how they take away your light when you're not even aware of them. The wisdom shared by don Miguel Ruiz is based on a code of conduct that empowers you to transform your life for the better - once you've learned to shift those beastly self-limiting beliefs!

This inspirational book can be read in a few hours and in no time at all, you're given the key to true freedom, joy, and happiness. Of course, you have to do the work but the author shows you how it can be done. And, it's really that simple when you put your mind to it.

What would the world do without Brene Brown? I love this woman for being human and stepping out to share her stories so other women (and men) can be empowered. Vulnerability is a word we all prefer to ignore completely. Being vulnerable means being exposed. It takes courage to be vulnerable.

And, yet, there's so much power in being vulnerable. It allows you to be true to your SELF and to say to the world, 'This is me - take it or leave it" and being oh, so comfortable with that statement.

It was Brene Brown who taught me that vulnerability is NOT a weakness. In fact, it's an incredible, awesome, and empowering strength. Brene Brown encourages us to show up and be ourselves. How liberating!

And, if we use her knowledge to gain back our vulnerability, we can strive to be live fully, love purely, be better parents, and inspire the world with our leadership.

Watch this podcast as Brene Brown talks about vulnerability.

Final Thoughts

Books inspire me. They give me so much knowledge so that I may continue to grow, heal, change, and be closer to my true SELF. I encourage you to pick one (or all) of these books the next time you're wondering what to read. And, choose knowledge to empower yourself.
