California white sage, also known as sacred sage, grows naturally between Santa Barbara and northern Baja California.  Traditionally used by Native American tribes, this fragrant and silvery-leafed perennial shrub with white flowers is considered to have healing, purification, and cleansing properties. The leaves and sticks of white sage are still used today for smudging rituals.
