Californian white sage, also known as sacred sage, grows naturally between Santa Barbara and northern Baja California.  Traditionally used by Native American tribes, this fragrant and silvery-leafed perennial shrub with white flowers is considered to have healing, purification, and cleansing properties. The leaves and sticks of white sage are still used today for smudging rituals.

Our Californian white sage smudge sticks are organically and sustainably cultivated. The materials are hand-picked, and each smudge stick is hand-tied with care, respect, and humility. Our smudge sticks are bundled with 100% cotton and air-dried

The smudge sticks are perfect for purification and cleansing rituals with their earthy, aromatic smoke known to dispel negative and stagnant energies.

A Beginner’s Guide to Smudging

It does not require years of practice to master the art of smudging. Most importantly, remember to set the right intention before starting a cleansing or purification ritual.

Instructions

1. Prepare Your Tools for Smudging:

  • Matches
  • Candle
  • A large seashell or clay pot to hold the smudge stick (this is useful to stop ashes from falling onto the floor or carpet if you’re smudging indoors)
  • A large feather
  • Smudge stick

2. Light the Smudge Stick: Light the candle. Hold the tip of the smudge stick over the flame until it catches alight. Gently fan the flame out with the feather, your hand, or by gently blowing on it. It should start to smoulder.

3. Start Smudging: If you are using a seashell or clay pot, place the smouldering stick inside. Otherwise, hold the non-burning side of the stick with your left hand. Keep fanning the stick with your feather so the embers don’t die down. Perform the ritual by wafting the smoke, with the feather, over the person or around the room or ritual space.

4. Extinguish the Smudge Stick: Some healers hold their smudge stick under running water until it is completely extinguished. I prefer to take my burning stick outside and place the smoking end into the soil.

5. Discard the Ashes: Sweep up any ashes that have fallen on the ground and empty them into the garden. Do the same if ashes are collected in the seashell or clay pot.  By tossing the ashes into the soil, you are honouring the cleansing or purification ritual by returning the plant material to Mother Earth.
